Data Privacy Day 2010

Thursday, January 28, 2010

In 2010, the UIPO welcomed a local privacy expert, then a partner at Baker & Daniels, LLP. Later in the morning, the event drew from university experts, discussing privacy as it relates to human resources, financial data, information policy, the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), and the Health Information Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Later on in the day, the program dove into the technical offerings and safeguards available for data protection. The final session dealt with "social privacy" — the misconception that engaging in social networks and other Net trends doesn't mean the complete relinquishing of all privacy.

The event originated at the IU Bloomington campus, and was broadcast to all other IU campuses.

2010 Schedule

Introduction & Welcome 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM

Mark S. Bruhn
Associate Vice President for Information and Infrastructure Assurance

She has worked closely with European and U.S. privacy regulators and sits on several international privacy committees.

Antokol will address such privacy-related topics as:

  • Why the interest in privacy now?

How Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Privacy Can All Coexist 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

"Aren't privacy and social networking at two opposite ends of the same street?"

Not necessarily.

Privacy doesn't and shouldn't be completely sacrificed for the ability to participate in social networking sites. But, understanding of this new paradigm is not only invaluable to protecting our privacy on the Net, it also makes things considerably easier.
